Criminal and Legal Reform Plan
We know — from decades of policing data and the lived experience of Black and brown people – that more police funding does not necessarily mean more community safety. Additional police funding does little if police forces remain systematically biased against Black and brown people. Our communities are not safer with more police patrols if those same police departments routinely engage in brutality.
We want community safety — real, holistic safety. We want well-funded schools that help ensure economic mobility, substance and alcohol counselors for our loved ones struggling with addiction, after school programs for our young kids, and green spaces for our families to enjoy together. These aren’t pie in the sky proposals. They are doable and available solutions to the problems we face. As your Congresswoman, I will:
- Work to provide matching funding to states that reallocate money away from law enforcement entities and towards social workers, public mental health professionals, anti-violence programs, trauma centers, addiction treatment, and community support networks.
- Divest our federal taxpayer dollars from brutal and discriminatory policing and invest in a new vision of public safety.
- End to the use of the death penalty at the federal level.
- Permanently end transfers of military equipment to state and local law enforcement agencies and work to immediately return such equipment and weaponry to the federal government
- Work to abolish ICE and ban all for-profit detention facilities.
